What "USDA Certified Organic" means at a farmers market

The USDA Organic seal certifies that produce meets federal standards for soil quality, animal husbandry practices, pest and weed control, additives, and absence of synthetic substances. At a farmers market, the "certified organic" designation means at least one vendor at the market holds USDA Organic certification.

Some markets also include vendors using "organic practices" without formal certification — typically smaller farms for whom the certification process is cost-prohibitive. Ask your local market manager for vendor-specific details.
